Batingaw Festival is celebrated in Cabuyao City located in Laguna, Philippines. Cabuyao came from a Filipino word “Kabuyaw” which refers to a local tree bearing a fruit used as a shampoo in the olden days. This was used to name the Laguna town which was eventually changed to “Cabuyao” by a Spanish friar. It became a city in 2012 by virtue of the Republic Act No. 10163.
Cabuyao had been named as the richest municipality in the Philippines as it is the place where large factories of the multinational companies are located. Kampanang ginto means “Golden Church Bell.” The simultaneous ringing of church bells in Cabuyao marks the start of Batingaw Festival. The people of Cabuyao believe that ringing of the church bells will bring good agricultural harvest for the year.
How is the Batingaw Festival celebrated?
The festival starts with a parade of the Kampanang Ginto, floats and a motorcade of vehicles. It is participated by the local government, Cabuyao’s eighteen barangays, public and private schools of different levels, and business establishments in the city. During the joyful week, activities such as street dancing, trade fair exhibits and singing contests are done.
The peak of the celebration is marked by fireworks at night, announcement and awarding of prizes to the different competitions during the week, and the declaration of the year’s winners for the Search for Cabuyao’s Mutya and Lakan. This beauty pageant is the common finale in all Philippine fiestas. This is a preliminary contest for the city’s entry to the National Binibining Pilipinas contest.
