WHERE IS THE BINIRAY FESTIVAL CELEBRATED
The fun and festivities of Biniray festival can be witnessed and experience in the province of Romblon which is known in the country as the leading producer of high-quality marble almost similar to the ones from Italy.
THE ORIGIN OF BINIRAY FESTIVAL
According to the story, the festival commemorates the day when the typhoon surge the Spanish galleon whey they are about to leave Romblon. The Spanish galleon carries the replica of Cebu’s Sto. Niño. The galleon was forced to go back to Romblon because of the typhoon and they brought the Sto. Niño statue to the church and had a mass, but when they tried to return the Sto. Niño statue to the galleon, they cannot move the Sto. Niño. The Sto. Niño statue stayed in St. Joseph Cathedral for many centuries. The sad story is that in 1991, the statue was stolen and hasn’t been recovered up until now.

The highlight of Biniray Festival is the flotilla vessels that circle the Romblon Bay seven times. It is being done to remember the day the Spanish galleon tries to leave Romblon and remove the Sto. Niño from Romblon. Then it will be followed by colorful parade, it is participated by people with colorful flowers and dressed in lively colored costumes.
On the Biniray Festival itself, locals should already be awake at an early morning to catch up with the parade that begins from the 400-year old St. Joseph Cathedral, where the image of Sto. Niño is carried and accompanied by different tribes proceeding to the pier where the float is waiting for the Sto. Niño.
