The Glimpse of EDSA Revolution

Revolution, by its definition is synonymously recognized as rebellion or uprising against the current government or administration. It is an act of group of people or a movement often violent to overthrow an old regime having an immense desire for excessive reformation.

For many days, people of all ages including children occupied the entire street of Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue or what we know as EDSA today not knowing exactly what is going to happen after what they did. On those periods of time, distress and fear has come upon them, fear for their safety, their families, their future and for the possible consequences of the revolution they ignited. All this things have come across their minds but the earnest desire to stand up and fight for their freedom is what really compelled them to move on and continue.

Threats are spreading that bullets and armors will be the response of the loyalist and supporters of the administration so the nuns and the priest holding their rosaries are continuously praying that there will be no bloodshed. On the other hand women and other people are attending to the needs of the men for food. Men served as stand by guards in case loyalist will attack them. On the other side of the roads are the tanks that are just waiting for an order to attack this millions of people. Even militaries and troops were touched when they were given food to eat.

This is the depiction of EDSA Revolution and for everyone who has been a part of this historic event; memoirs will forever remain in their hearts.

Brief History of EDSA Revolution

In the Saturday evening of 22nd of February 1986, at around 6:30 pm, the first EDSA people power revolution broke out at the headquarters of Armed Forces of the Philippines in Camp Aguinaldo when the Defense Minister Juan Ponce Enrile together with Lt. Gen. Fidel V. Ramos, AFP deputy Chief of Staff and Philippine Constabulary chief held a press conference announcing that they are withdrawing their support from President Ferdinand Marcos and asked him to step down from his Presidency.

At around 9:00 pm, the same evening, with the help of Radio Veritas, (radio station) Jaime Cardinal Sin, the Archbishop of Manila appealed to the Filipino people to come out of their houses and support the revolt announced by Enrile and Ramos by marching and going to the section of EDSA. Many people responded to it though in the beginning, some are skeptical about it. Hundreds of thousands unarmed civilians came to EDSA until the next day until they increased into 2 million.

With the help of prayers and unwavering support of the Filipinos, the peaceful revolution and supreme democratic act resulted to the departure of President Marcos from Malacanang to  Hawaii together with his family and the restoration of the nation’s democracy that has been withhold from the people for 14 years being under a dictatorship. As a result, in the early morning of 25th of February, Corazon C. Aquino, wife of the assassinated Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino took the Presidential oath of office administered by the Supreme Court Associate Justice Claudio Teehankee at Club Filipino. She was proclaimed the 11th President of the Philippine Republic and first ever lady President of the country.

EDSA Revolution served as an inspiration to the nation and to other neighboring countries for showing them the true power of democracy.
