The City of Dapitan, the capital of Zamboanga Del Norte is not only known for its historical spot where the National hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal was exiled during the Spanish regime, it is also known and famous for its annual festivity called the Kinabayo Festival. Kinabayo Festival is a two-day festival which will be celebrated on Friday, July 24 until Saturday, July 25, 2015.

Kinabayo Festival Historical Background
Kinabayo Festival is a glamorous and interesting event celebrated by the Zamboangueños every year in honor of their Patron saint, St. James. This festival depicts the re-enactment of the Spanish-Moorish Wars primarily the Battle of Cavadonga which is also known as the Battle of Clavijo in Spain.
According to a legendary story, around 844 AD, the Spanish Christian forces under General Pelagio’s leadership had their last stand against the Saracans (Muslims) and were able to see the chance of triumph over them when they saw the apparition of the St. James the apostles riding in a horse and carrying a sword who intervened in the battle and caused them to achieve their victory. It is also in the same manner that the Spanish Jesuit sought help from the patron to defeat the Moro invaders in the land of Dapitan and won the victory over them. Since then, the locals of Dapitan re-enacts the tale of the Battle in Calvijo during the Kinabayo Festival.
This festivity has instigated to be a religious spectacle for all who are devotees of St. James but through the years, the Kinabayo Festival has been evolved into the social and economic, spiritual, historical and cultural integration. The color and modernization of this event has made it become attractive to the tourists that visit Dapitan.
Kinabayo Festival Highlights of Events
Kinabayo festival features the Miss Dapitan beauty pageants, street dancing, drum and bugle competition, sports competition, agro-trade fairs, night presentations, motocross competition, big bike stunts and exhibition, jetski exhibition street parties and the famous “Patunob” which is the dance procession of the image of Señor Santiago (St. James) at St. James the Greater Parish Church.
