To support this celebration, the Department of Education encourages all public and private schools to take part with this event and include these national heroes in classroom discussions and highlight their courage and patriotism.
National Heroes Day is also celebrated in different countries around the world to give tribute to the brave men and women who fought for their country’s pride and sovereignty. In the Philippines, we also commemorate the heroes of the Philippine Revolution as they fought their way and battled with a number of colonizers who ruled the country for a number of years.

Wreath-laying ceremonies are usually held during the National Heroes Day in the Philippines. This is done in the morning at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (Heroes’ Cemetery) and is mostly replicated in different cities and municipalities in the country.
The Department of Education encourages all public and private schools to include the national heroes in their discussion and re-acquaint their students with the courageous heroes who fought for the country’s freedom.

History of National Heroes Day in the Philippines
National Heroes day was advocated by a few historians and legislators who believe that there has been a gap in the memory of the Filipino people as many of the heroes were forgotten and their contributions were unacknowledged.
This day was actually programmed in order to give tribute to the national heroes who are not given special notice and may not be given a special day of commemoration like Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio.
Initially, National Heroes Day was celebrated on November 30 and was held on the birthday of Andres Bonifacio. A few years ago, it was moved to the 4th Monday of August to pay tribute to the known and unknown men and women who sacrifice their lives for the countries’ freedom.
