ALL ABOUT OBANDO FERTILITY RITES
The Obando Fertility Rites is very popular in the Philippines and other countries because it is believed that if a woman participates in the festival and prays to bear a child, her prayers will be answered. However, this three days festival is not all about fertility. The people of Obando held this festival to commemorate the three patron saints of the town.
The three patron saints of the town are San Pascual Baylon (Saint Paschal), Santa Clara (Saint Clare) and Nuestra Señora de Salambao (Our Lady of Salambao). During the festival a traditional street dance is bein done by the town people and those visitors who wants to participate. The images of the three saints are also present in the street dance. The participants are dancing while singing Santa Clara Pinung-Pino. This is the traditional street dance that believed has the power to make the participating woman wish to conceive a child come true. They called this dance fertility dance. The fertility dance existed for so many years that it is even mentioned in Noli Me Tangere, a Jose Rizal’s novel.
