Palawod Festival is one of the colourful celebrations and festivities in the historic island and considered as the cultural hub of the country, the Cebu Province. Palawod Festival is a thanksgiving for the plentiful and abundant catch which the fisherman enjoyed this day.

Palawod Festival 2015 will take place on Monday, 29th of June.

Palawod Festival is always celebrated by the Cebuanos every June 29.

Palawod Festival Origin and Background

The Bantayan Island which is located at the Northern part of Cebu, is not only known and famous for its High caste white sand beaches and resorts but also well-thought-out as the marines’ territory as every marine creature can be found in this beautiful island. The island is regarded as the supplier and dealer of fishes to the sardines’ manufacturers in the province and other parts of the country aside from their famous and delicious dried fish or “buwad” in Cebuano.

The term “Palawod” is a Cebuano-Visayan word which means to go further into the deep blue sea, where the fishermen go for a big catch. Fishing is predominantly the source of livelihood by the folks in this island. So they give a high regard and respect to their marine ecosystem as well as preserving their primary source of food and they take pride for having this wonderful blessing from God by keeping and commemorating an exceptional and one of a kind, Palawod Festival.

Palawod festival is associated with the feast of the Patron saints Peter and Paul who were called by Jesus in the Bible as the “Fishers of Men.” This festival has achieved and received a national and international vote of confidence.

What do Bantayanons do in Palawod Festival

Palawod Festival is a depiction of the Bantayanons extraordinary appreciation to their marine ecosystem.

The highlight of this festivity is a street dancing which apprehends and upholds their unique traditional fishing routines being performed with complex and erudite moves and hand strokes to the beat of the music especially arranged and accustomed to the dance of the sea waves with colourful marine creature costumes and props. People of Bantayan, simply exemplifies the way of life of the marine creatures through the series of grand dancing performances. Different kinds of marine foods are served during the festival, arranged and presented in an artistic manner, some of which are not normally served in the dining table.
