History of the Pasungay Festival:

Pasungay Festival is a religious event observed in San Joaquin, Iloilo in honour of the Child Jesus.  San Joaquin is a coastal area which is the last municipality of the Iloilo province.  Pasungay Festival can be likened to the Spanish bullfighting.  However, instead of bulls, Filipinos use their national animal, the humble carabao. According to some historians, Pasungay was originated during the Spanish era, when the two violent carabaos in the farm field are seen fighting by the farmers who are resting. The scene has caught their attention and they become interested to it. It soon became popular in the province.

The carabao or the water buffalo is common in the Philippines.  In the Philippines, they play an important role in agriculture, transportation and livestock.  During the Pasungay Festival, prized carabaos, decorated with colourful floral necklace, fight for who should breed the high-quality female carabao.
