THE BASIC EDUCATION PROGRAM IN THE PHILIPPINES
The basic stages of Education in the Philippines started in Nursery, Kindergarten, and Preschool then 6 years in Elementary followed by 4 years in High school. After getting a diploma in high school they can choose whatever course they want to take. Most courses can be completed within for 4 years but some courses can be completed within 5 years and there are vocational courses that can be completed within 2 years. After completing college, they can face the real world and live the career that they choose and start establishing themselves.
THE SITUATION OF EDUCATION IN THE PHILIPPINES
But being considered as third world country, more Filipinos are still striving hard to get a good education. Same with other countries, there are two kinds of school in the Philippines, the Public schools and the Private schools.
The well-off families send their children to private school because teachings in Private schools are considered better than Public school. Private schools have better facilities and equipments. The books being used by the students are updated and corrected. But reality bites because as a third world country, Philippines has more poor family than rich family.
Poor families have no choice but to send their children to Public school. The difference is Public school has little facilities and school equipment is not enough. The students have to share books because of the scarcity of the books. The books being used are often outdated and have lots of error. In some places especially remote places, the scarcity of teachers, school equipments and classroom are the major problems. Public schools are being supported by the Government but with lesser fund the government cannot support the Public schools very well.
Most students in the public schools cannot continue their studies because of having financial problems. They were leave with no choice but to stop studying and start working to help their family. That is the reason why the number of students decreases. A big number of students from nursery to 4th grade then it will start to decrease from 5th grade up to college because most family choose to send their children to work rather than let them stay in school.
The status of the family plays a big part of the children’s education. Some family cannot even afford to send their children to school. That is why the number of the illiterate keeps on increasing. When a person didn’t get enough education they will have a hard time on looking for a good job. That will result for an increase on the statistics of unemployed people. Unemployed result to poverty, which will make Philippines stay as a third world country.
THE NEW EDUCATION PROGRAM OF THE PHILIPPINES
Today, Department of Education formulated K-12 program and currently followed by Philippine’s schools. K-12 means the students have to spend 12 years in school before going to college. According to studies this K-12 program will make the students more prepared when they reach college and will make the students more competitive to other students from other countries such as students from Japan and Korea who also spend 12 years in basic education. For those it is good news but to others especially those who are below poverty line, this is a problem. Poor family is having a hard time sending their children to school for 6 years what more for 12 years. But they can’t do anything about it because it is already implementing in the country.
THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATION
The status of the family plays a big part on the education of the children. Children have to have a good education to have a good life in the future. If each child will have a good education, a big chance of being successful is possible for them. A good future of each child will also help to change the status of the Philippines from being a third world country to one of the richest country.
