Dancing is one of the Filipinos’ favorite hobby, through the years it is became a part of the Filipinos’ life. They dance to honor their leaders and to entertain their visitors, they also dance to give praise to their god and they dance to illustrate their way of living.
THE SALAKOT DANCE
There is a dance in Luzon wherein the dance presents a piece of head gear and this is the Salakot dance. According to Salakot dance history it is a dance that represents the Salakot. Salakot is a piece of head gear that made of rattan. It is usually used by the farmers to protect them from the heat of the sun. Salakot is also used to represents the Filipino because aside from the farmers it is also used by Filipinos with different status. The dance is composed of female and male dancers or all female dancers. They wear traditional Balintawak costume and use Salakot as part of their dance sometimes they used a plain Salakot but most of the time dancers choose to put decorations to the Salakot to make it more beautiful. The Salakot dance is accompanied by the rondalla music playing fast rhythm folk songs.
THE SALAKOT DANCE IN MODERN DAYS
According to Salakot dance history, it is being danced during special occasions and on the Luzon part of the Philippines but today, Salakot dance is being dance during school activities and other cultural programs. It is also being taught in the school to gain awareness for the students. In other countries, there are still Filipino communities who perform different folk dances like Salakot dance to show other races how rich the Filipino culture is.
