Philippine History: Travel through time

People taught that the history of the Philippines starts from the colonization of the Spaniards but before them, Philippines already started its history.

BEFORE THE SPANIARDS

The historian had a hard time tracking the pre-colonial history because most of the evidence is lost and most of those records are written in tree, leaves and bamboos. Only artifacts from pre-colonial history are the only evidence they had from the Philippines ancestors. According to the historians, a group of ethnic people called the Negritos are migrated in the Philippines from the island of Borneo then followed by the Malays. They are considered the first people in the Philippines.

THE SPANISH COLONIZATION

1521, the year Ferdinand Magellan landed on the shore of the Philippines. They tried to influence the Philippines by introducing Christianity. Some Filipinos are open to idea and willing to embrace Christianity but there are still some who stands firm on their belief and ready to fight for what they believe and that is Lapu-lapu. Lapu-lapu and his men fight Magellan and other Spaniards. Magellan died in this encounter and from the original number of five ships and 300 men only 18 men and one ship named Victoria returned to Spain. Magellan had failed on this expedition but still this expedition was known as the first circumnavigation in the history, this expedition proves that the world in round.

After the expedition of Magellan, Villalobos expedition came next. Villalobos is the one who give the name Las Islas Filipinas after King of Spain, King Philip II and that is the start of the Spanish colonization. Spanish introduce many things to the Philippines and Christianity is their biggest influence. Philippines became under the leadership of the Spanish ruler. Spanish treat the Filipinos as slave. Many Filipino fight against the Spanish through battles and there are some who express their rage through ink. After the death of Jose Rizal, his works open the mind of the people and give them idea to fight against the Spanish. In June 12, 1898, Emilio Aguinaldo declared the Independence of the Philippines, he is the first Philippine president.

THE AMERICANS 1898-1946

The American took over when the Spanish and the Americans finalized their negotiation through Treaty of Paris wherein the America will pay $20,000,000.00 to the Spain in exchange for the Philippines. While the Philippines is under the America, the Philippines became the most advanced country in the Asia. The war started when two American privates killed three Filipino soldiers because of this incident the war between the Filipino and American started. Because of Filipinos do not have good war equipment they are easily overpowered by the Americans.

On September 17, 1935, Manuel L. Quezon and Sergio Osmeña were declared the President and the Vice-president of Commonwealth Government.

THE JAPANESES OCCUPATION

The Japanese attack on the Pearl Harbor marked the starts of Japanese Occupation in the Philippines. Many people suffered and died under the cold hands of the Japanese, they killed anyone who fights against them even the innocent civilian did not escape from their torture. This may considered as the darkest days of the Filipinos. But there are Filipinos that are brave enough to fight against the Japanese, they are the Hukbalahap. With their help the Filipinos still get some hope to be free from the Japanese. Then Mac Arthurs and his men landed on Leyte to help Filipinos to fight the Japanese. On September 2, 1945 the Japanese surrender but they lived an extremely big damage to Manila and killed million Filipinos.

AFTER THE WARS

In 1946, the third republic of the Philippines started. Manuel Roxas was elected as the first President of the Third Republic of the Philippines. The Philippines is being run by Filipino leaders, the decision is mainly from the leaders of the new republic.
